Betty Creamer receives a standing ovation from students, staff and special guests, including Bishop Dena Harrison (top, left) after Creamer was welcomed as headmistress of St. Michaels Episcopal School in Bryan on Thursday.
The 57-year-old South Carolina native was chosen this summer to replace Headmaster Charles Raymer, who left after less than a year at the small Bryan private school.
Creamer, who has a home in Orange County, has traveled widely, most recently returning from a one-year stint as head of a school in Japan.
But Creamer said that moving to Bryan-College Station was exciting. It's a place where she feels "God's pleasure," she said.
St. Michael's appealed to Creamer's builder instinct almost immediately after she visited for the first time in June.
"My first thought was: What a world of opportunity awaits someone here," she said. "Whoever becomes head of this school is going to have a fabulous time in this phase of building at this school."
In the next few years, Creamer said, she hopes to see St. Michael's enrollment expand from its current 170 students to 360 students, the school's maximum capacity.
Creamer, who has a degree in theater, also said she hoped to expand the school's performing arts program. St. Michael's is constructing an 18,000-square-foot gym and performing arts center.
Getting the word out about St. Michael's can be challenging, Creamer said, because there are so many good schools in the area.
But she promises parents that their kids will receive special attention at St. Michael's.
"There are two things to know here: We know your child, and we love your child," she said.

CYCLE OF PRAYER: for School Families
Each week in chapel, we use a special prayer from the National Association of Episcopal Schools Cycle of
Prayer. Each of the more than 1000 Episcopal Schools in the U.S. has these prayers for use in chapel. In the
Nuntius each week, we will print the prayer for the following week.
In addition to the NAES Cycle of Prayer, we have our own school cycle of prayer. We will pray for a group
of school families, faculty/staff and Board of Trustees members each week during the year; and each
member of these groups will be named during one week of the school year. We will list the names for the
following week in the Nuntius, and we invite family members to attend chapel during your family’s special
week (or at any other time, of course).

February 26, 2010 School News Vol. 24
Last week, we began the Season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday chapel service. In the
Christian calendar, Lent provides a season of soul-searching and repentance prior to the celebration of
Easter. In the early days of the Church, the faithful rededicated themselves to God during Lent while
others entered into a time of instruction in the faith and preparation for Baptism. The 40 days of Lent
(Sundays not counted) remind us of Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days.
Many people today think of Lent as a time to give up something they like—i.e., chocolate or
desserts (food seems to be the big category for Lenten sacrifice). However, the more important aspect
of Lent involves cleansing our hearts—giving up being angry with someone or giving up some hurts that
keep us from a good relationship with friends or family members as well as with God. As one of our
high school students phrased this in chapel: ―giving up being mean to each other‖.
We used this prayer in our High School chapel last week, and the words of the prayer may help us
all find those places in our hearts which need the cleansing and healing of Lent:
Go forth into the world in peace. Be of good courage. Hold fast to that which is
good. Render to no one evil for evil. Strengthen the fainthearted. Support the
weak; help the afflicted. Honor all. Love and serve God, rejoicing in the power
of the Spirit. And the blessing of God—Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer—be upon
us and remain with us for ever. Amen.
Congratulations to all our students (and the faculty members who work with them) who
represented St. Michael’s so wonderfully in both the TAPPS Academic and TAPPS Art District
Competitions. First place in both for our school!! Please see below for a complete list of individual
winners.

We will present TAPPS awards at chapel next Wednesday, and we invite parents and friends to
attend (11:35 a.m.). A special ―thank you‖ to the adult competition coordinators: Pam Horner, Melissa
Schulman, Judy Jefferson and Moira Baldwin-Reed. A special ―thank you‖ to Susan Whiting for
coordinating and running the Hospitality Room when we hosted TAPPS Academics and for being a
chaperone and driver for the Art competition. We thank all faculty and staff who worked with our
students and for all who helped to make our hosting of the Academic Contest such a great experience for
all the participants.
As we celebrate these awards and victories, please remember that while these students and
teachers are indeed remarkable in their achievements, they excel most in being people who represent us
well and whose behavior shows their love and caring for each other as well as their respect for the
dignity of all people.
Thanks be to God!
Faithfully,
Dr. Betty L. Creamer
